Benefits of Organic Cotton Clothing

Using Organic Textiles For Your Decorative Fabrics

Organic textiles are becoming more and more popular with the rise of eco-friendly  and green living.  When you are looking for decorative fabrics, no matter what the uses may be for, organic may be an option you want to consider.

Organic textiles are made of natural fibers.  You’ll find they ade made of materials such as cotton, wool, and flax.  It can be tough to find a textile that you know is organic because currently, USDA National Organic Program doesn’t certify textiles rigorously the way food must be.

But other third parties take it upon themselves to verify wholesale fabric.  The Global Organic Textiles Standard is one such organization.  They are the gold standard for certifying textiles.

Their website allows people to search for specific products that are organic.  Using their website is one easy way to  ensure that wholesale textiles you buy are indeed organic.  If it is not listed, it’s not certified by GOTS standards.

Organic textiles have their benefit in that they aren’t treated with any chemicals that don’t meet toxicological criteria.  Meaning, none of the chemicals are harmful.  It is important if you are creating items for people with allergies.

It is also important if you are using wholesale textiles to create anything that will be used by small children.  At the very least if they put a blanket or pillow in their mouth that has organic fabrics, you can be sure nothing toxic is going into their systems.

Many consumers believe that all cotton is equal when it comes to its production but nothing could be further from the truth.  These differences are strikingly apparent when you consider cotton made from sustainable farming methods and conventional farming methods.

“Organic” has experienced a meteoric rise in status as many companies are striving to be associated with a more environmentally friendly image.  It can be seen in foods, restaurants, toys and of course organic clothes for children.

Unfortunately, many do not know the benefits of organic clothing for children and mistakenly believe it is just the label of “organic” that sets the two apart.

Only about 50 years ago did farms that produced cotton switched from mainly utilizing sustainable techniques from what we now consider “conventional” methods that deplete resources, threaten the health of people and wildlife, as we as casue irreparable harm to the environment.

There are many benefits of having your children’s clothing made from organic fibers, but the main advantages are four-fold:

  • It is better for the environment
  • It is better for the farmers and workers on organic farms
  • It is better for your health and your child’s heath
  • It is cheaper in the long run

Benefits of Organic Clothes for Children

There are benefits of having your kids wear organic clothes, especially if your child has sensitive skin or has skin allergies.  There are a lot of chemicals and toxins that go into the production of clothes.  For example, cottom is one of the most common fibers used in the making of clothes, both adults and children, but it is one of the largest consumers of the world’s pesticides.

Cotton crops make up about 2.5 percent of the world’s cultivated land, but it uses approximately 25 percent of the world’s pesticides and 10 percent of the world’s insecticides in its cultivation.

Not only that, once the cotton is harvested, it is further abused by the harsh scours, dyes, sprays and other toxins that manufactuerers use even before the fabric is sent to get cut into patterns for clothes.

Organic clothes for children are entirely different.  No chemicals are used,  no pesticides or insecticides, and every from the farm it comes from to the production facility where the final product is made, and they all must go through strict guidelines for it to be considered “organic” .

The absence of these toxins that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agengy) have stated are known is a huge benefit to children with skin allergies or sensitive skin.  Health issue aside, though this  is a significant advantage of organic clothes, the environmental effects are can be seen and felt as well.

Organic clothing does have more practical advantage that directly affects your wallet as well.  Many organic clothes have a premium over their couterparts made from conventionally grown cotton.  However, it has been shown that organic clothing lasts much longer due to the lack of harsh treatment.  Being able to keep your clothes last longer is such a huge money saving factor especially if you have children.
